The coffee bean is the seed of the coffee plant. It was domesticated in the 10th c. in Ethiopia. Documents suggest that initially coffee was used in 15th c. Sufi dhikr / praise rituals in Yemen. It is more of a challenge to learn of uses among people whose experiences were not written down. Coffee spread to Europe through the Ottoman Empire and the institution of the coffeehouse.

Bosnian coffee, sometimes called "pravu kafu" / "the real coffee", is a stovetop coffee brew, a process found in regions and among populations whose histories are influenced by the Ottoman period. There are many different names given to, and variations on, this type of coffee, but the basic process and social practices involved are recognizable to all.
